Description:
We are very proud to launch the My Sister’s Keeper App 1.0! This app provides a platform for a global community of girls to receive loving affirmations and answers about the questions they ask themselves growing up. Not everyone has a positive maternal confidant to guide them and this app will help provide you with a few virtual BFF’s (Best Friend Forever) which will help you recognize women in your life who want to be there for you. The My Sister’s Keeper App is made possible by DIVAS for Social Justice. DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice encourages and trains girls living in underserved communities in New York City to use technology for social change. DIVAS Co-Founders Clarisa James & Sha Sha Feng developed the program, Imaging Ourselves, which inspired the My Sister’s Keeper App.  Imaging Ourselves is an 8- week program-training girls in digital photography and Adobe Photoshop while engaging in discussions of how images of women of color are manipulated and portrayed in the media. James and Feng were inspired to create this program because of a lack of representation of positive images of African American, Latina and Asian women. In addition, in the Fall of 2013, Murray Cox, a multi-media producer volunteered his time to co-facilitate the Imaging Ourselves program with James and taught the young women in our program to code. While all girls are welcome to interact and submit future questions for this app, DIVAS will continue to train youth to develop the app to represent the importance of diversity in this world and beauty of it.
